YUM! Strengthens footing in Ethiopia
The first Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) franchise is set to open its doors in the capital located within Bole, inside the Berhane Adere building. The first eatery will open in what used to be Ambassador Brand clothing store, The Reporter has learnt.
Elias Ketema, the co-owner of Kaldis, confirmed to The Reporter the location of the first restaurant. In addition to KFC, he is also set to open a terrace on top of his signature restaurant near the Black Lion hospital and serve “High Tea and cocktail drinks.”
“We are planning to start the first KFC restaurant in 2018,” Elias told The Reporter. “We are also looking for other locations in Addis around Sarbet, CMC and Kazanchis”.
The brand name Kentucky Fried Chicken, owned by YUM! would be the second brand under multinational to be introduced in the capital after debuting Pizza Hut franchise in the CMC area two weeks ago. Its second location in Bole has failed to make its debut, as previously announced.
Pizza Hut Ethiopia said in a statement that, “Due to the overwhelming positive response at our CMC location, the opening of our Morning Star Mall location has been postponed to a later date and We apologize for the inconvenience”.
However, The Reporter has learnt that the reason for the belated opening of the franchise was due to the lack of a transformer to meet the demands of a busy fast food joint restaurant. It has since received the needed transformer and is awaiting its full installation with Plans to open soon.
The company has not yet announced the opening date for the second Pizza Hut location.
