Zayed Sustainability Prize partners with XHUB Addis
Looking to attract prospective candidates from Ethiopia for the USD 3 million prize fund,Zayed Sustainability Prize has decided to partner with xHUB Addis, one of Ethiopia’s noted incubation hubs, just in time for the upcoming 2020 edition.
Founded in 2008 as Zayed Future Energy Prize, as a remembrance to the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan – the founding father of the United Arab Emirates and an advocate of global sustainability – the organization is known to attract participants from many nations. However, there has been a minimal interest within Ethiopia.
With five categories, in health, food, energy, water and Global Schools, each worth USD 600,000;the Prize has drawn attention to global sustainability priorities.
“Hosting awareness sessions to encourage Ethiopian entrepreneurs to take part in the Zayed Sustainability Prize is a great way for us to help develop the capacity of small-to-medium sized companies and non-profit organizations, thereby helping create sustainable and positive leadership solutions,” said xHUB founder, TewordosTadesse.
According to the prize committee, the prize has evolved to align itself to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in recent years.
“Africa has one of the world’s largest untapped pools of talent. Exceptional individuals and innovative organizations are emerging rapidly here and they have the potential to scale solution in global health, agriculture, energy and water. It is, therefore, extremely important for us to be in Africa, where entrants to the Prize can benefit from mentorship and funding, which would enable them to leapfrog barriers, accelerate solutions, and become role models in their communities,” LamyaFarwwaz (PhD), Director of the Prize Committee, told a room full of activists at the headquarter of xHUB, near Edna Mall.
The next victor is to be announced in January of next year, during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.
