Horsemen to face African giants TP Mazembe
Twelve-time Ethiopian Premier League (EPL) champions Saint George will face Congolese side TP Mazembe in the CAF Champions league tomorrow at the newly-built Bahir Dar Stadium.
The Horsemen will travel to Bahir Dar to take on defending champions, The Ravens, in the first round first leg clash.
St George were held to a 1-1 draw in Seychelles by St Michel United but still advanced 4-1 on aggregate in the African Champions League. Over 50,000 fans will be expect in newly-built built stadium including spectators who traveled from Addis Ababa starting from Thursday.
Veteran striker Salahdin Said, who recently rejoined his former club, will not be eligible to play as he has played for MC Alger in the CAF Champions League while Ugandan striker Biryan Umni will be out due to injury.
The Horsemen are expected to capitalize as they will be playing in front of home fans. However TP Mazembe, with their rich experience in the CAF Champions League, will not be an easy challenge for the home team.
Mazembe are among the major sports clubs in DR Congo and one of the most successful football teams in Africa ever. In 1967 and 1968, it won the African Cup of Champions.
Mazembe was the first team to successfully defend the African Champions Cup. This feat was finally repeated in 2003 and 2004 by Enyimba. By winning the CAF Champions League, they qualified for the 2009 FIFA Club World Cup. In their first match in the quarter-finals they lost 2–1 to Pohang Steelers of South Korea.
In 2010 they retained the 2010 CAF Champions League, and in December they became the first African side to contest the final of the FIFA Club World Cup after defeating both Pachuca of Mexico 1–0 in the quarter-finals and Internacional of Brazil2–0 in the semi-finals.
In 2015, TP Mazembe secured their fifth title in the competition after defeating USM Alger of Algeria 4–1 aggregate in the 2015 CAF Champions League Final.
The second leg will take place on the weekend of March 18-20, 2016 in Lubumbashi.
