The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is a 6,450 MW hydropower project nearing completion on the Abay River (Blue Nile) in Ethiopia, located about 30 km upstream from the Sudanese boarder. It will be the largest hydropower project in Africa. The project is currently entering its seventh year since its commencement. During this period, the saddle dam and other civil works are nearing completion. In addition to that, electromechanical works are also being undertaking. GERD, apart from providing electricity, is also expected to lay the foundation for regional and continental integration.
