Finding the True Cross
It was a colorful, beautiful and peaceful celebration inside Meskel Square. In full display were Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahdo Church hymns, perfect traditional clothing, dancing, lots of drums reminding many of the unique day that commemorates the discovery of the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified. The night ended with the lighting and burning of a gigantic bonfire (Demera). The direction where the Demera falls indicates a sign and a rain in the midst of it indicates a prosperous year. Many use the ashes to put on their foreheads as blessings.
