On July 18, 2018 Ethiopian Airlines made a historic flight to Asmara, Eritrea that reconnected the people of Ethiopia and Eritrea after twenty years. Commanded by Captain Yoseph Hailu, it took only 58 minutes for the Boeing B787-9 aircraft that carried 315 passengers including government officials, businesspeople, journalists, and people of Eritrean descent to land at the Asmara International Airport. Ethiopian passengers were emotional when they meet a large crowd of people waiting outside of the airport. Hailemariam Dessalegn, former prime minister of Ethiopia, his wife, Roman Tesfaye, and Araya Desta, Eritrea’s Permanent Representative to the African Union was the guest of honor at the inaugural flight. Ethiopian Airlines hosted a gala dinner at Palace Hotel, Asmara where senior Eritrean government officials were in attendance.
