State Secretary Tillerson hopes for shorter SoE
The US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson expressed today that he hopes that the government would shorten the time of the state of emergency which has been in effect since February 16, 2018. Tillerson said this at his media briefing along with Workineh Gebeyehu (PhD), Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Tillerson said that although the state of emergency was announced for six months, he hopes that the government would consider shortening it.
“Ethiopia is now at a critical time,” he said, inferring that Ethiopia is a young democracy of only 27 years.
Appreciating the government’s efforts for peaceful power transition, Tillerson said that despite its role to quell the recent unrest in the country, the state of emergency will suppress rights of citizens. He also appreciated the government for measures to release politically significant individuals from prison.
Apart from local political issues, Tillerson and Workineh discussed regional and continental issues focusing more on Somalia and South Sudan.
