The release of thousands of prisoners following the decision by the Executive Committee of the Ethiopian Peoples’ Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) a month and a half ago was a bold move which delighted many and made them hope that real change would come to the country’s political arena. But, the release of some of the prominent opposition politicians had triggered people to come to the streets en masse and celebrate the release of the politicians. One such incident was the release of Merera Gudina (PhD), chairman of the Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC) a month ago. The other one was the release of Bekele Gerba, the deputy chair of OFC and other seven individuals. Andualem Arage, leadership member of the opposition Unity for Democracy and Justice (UDJ); Eskinder Nega, political activist and former publisher; Ahmedin Jebel and others were warmly welcomed by their families, relatives and friends at the gates of the Kality Prison.
