Letter to the Editor

Letter to the Editor

In your English weekly newspaper, The Reporter, published on the 2nd of February, 2019, you misquoted and erroneously covered the news of Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Workneh Gebeyehu’s (PhD) report to the House of People’s Representatives.

Hilton Addis: renovation or distortion?

I was at the Hilton Hotel in Addis this week and was flabbergasted by what I saw. Saddened, my patriotic soul urged me to share what I witnessed with readers. Over the years, many things have changed but not to the better and I have always ignored it trying to convince myself that it’s okay, telling myself ‘The place needs renovation’. But now, I couldn’t take it anymore, cheat myself as usual.

The move by FHC is the wrong one

I am writing this letter from Fassilo Woodworks with regards to the recent rent revision made by the Federal Housing Corporation (FHC) and how the revision impacts Fassilo and other similar companies.

The new food and medicine administration bill will save lives and advance the public’s health

In a recent opinion article “The Magic of the new Food and Medicine Administration Bill” that appeared in The Reporter on December 15, 2018, Yohannes Woldegebriel critiqued the recently introduced bill in the Parliament: a bill that the Ministry of Health intends in good faith to protect and promote the health and wellbeing of Ethiopians.

Kindergarten? School? Where is the boundary?

Back home the child is burdened with a lot of responsibilities immediately after he/she joins kindergarten. Every activity they are doing is more of close to the role of school. There is no clear boundary between school and kindergarten.

A city worthy of its name

One month has passed since my arrival in Addis Ababa. Before I arrived, I did not know that Addis Ababa is blessed with so many flowers. This is a new discovery of mine. Irises bloom in early June in Japan, while here I can see them blooming now.

When in Africa, do as the Chinese do – in China

For 99.9 percent of foreigners working (studying) and living in China, this singular opportunity can only be realized under the complete control of the Chinese government. Unlike many countries in Africa, you cannot just drift into China, pay a visa on arrival and then hustle your way through an ethnic-based network of informal support.

A message to my Oromo brothers

Rivers may stop flowing and the rain may fail to pour down but our history of love remains forever in our hearts. Oromo people have been our neighbors and our reliable brothers and sisters when crisis arise; however, nowadays, those who do not want peace are trying to take peace away from us.

Connecting inner and outer worlds

The primary role of religion and spirituality is to reconnect, the very meaning of the Latin word religio-meaning ligaments. The Greek word polis – which led to the word politics – simply means city or public forum, where people come together. Why have religion and politics become so antagonistic when they have similar goals?

Justice should not be for sale at a negotiable price

As citizens all of us dream of living in a country where every law abiding citizen enjoys freedom of thought and freedom of deed unequalled of the advantage of this freedom. We have never compared our existing freedom with the curtailed freedom in other countries. Here, we have at least an emerging constitutional freedom of thought, freedom in the choice of business, profession or occupation, freedom to accumulate and own.
