UNESCO, professionals discuss potential media sector alliance

With an aim to “ensuring Ethiopia has a vibrant media sector capable of supporting the development and peace building agendas of the country,” the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Ethiopia Liaison office, is discussing with various media stakeholders in order to establish media sector coordination platform.

House amends state media proclamations

The House of People’s Representatives (HPR) has amended two separate proclamations to re-establish the Ethiopian News Service and the Ethiopian Press Agency (EPA) to solve challenges faced in regards to employees’ salaries and benefits.

Ethiopian Media Council gets formal recognition

​​​​​​​The Ethiopian Media Council has been formally recognized as an independent civil society organization (CSO) under the newly-amended proclamation that governs CSOs. The Council was formed following a general assembly held on January 12, 2016 at the assembly hall of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).

Ethiopia makes phenomenal improvement In world press freedom index

The World Press Freedom Index-2019, annual index published since 2002 by the French based Reporters without Borders, aka Reporters Sans Frontières (RSF), has ranked Ethiopia 110th out of 180 countries in general level of media freedom exhibiting an improvement of 40 places in ranking since last year where the administration of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) took over the reins of power at Arat Kilo.
